Swietlica

Polish Community Centre in Edinburgh

Swietlica (meaning 'meeting place' or 'howff ') is a drop-in centre situated in the Fort Community Wing in Leith. Founder, Kasia Raszewska facilitates the activities, which are run entirely by volunteers. Swietlica provides support, advice, recreation and a warm and friendly social ethos.

Child-care and education is provided for young children and a number of classes in English language for foreigners and Polish language for local Edinburgh based citizens.

Although mainly catering for Polish new arrivals, a few members of other East European countries as well as a number of Scottish born people attend Swietlica.

Swietlica is open every Monday from 4pm until 9pm. Well over 100 people attend each time. There have been several visits from politicians and others, including Malcolm Chisholm and Mark Lazarowicz who have engaged in a Q&A session with Polish members.

Swietlica receives financial support from Edinburgh Council and Cattanach Trust, which covers some food and materials for the children's activities and education programmes.

A number of attendees are under social and economic pressure and Swietlica provides personal support and referrals to appropriate support within the NHS and Council services. The volunteers are engaged in a constructive dialogue with Edinburgh Council, police and trade unions on issues relating to the concerns of the new immigrants, such as welfare rights, workplace issues, housing and education (especially English as an Additional Language).
Join us every Monday after 4pm for an informal chat and a cup of tea or coffee!
